East European countries controlled by USSR:
Poland
Czechoslovakia
Hungary
Romania
Bulgaria
Albania
E. Germany
(Yugoslavia broke away in '48 but still remained communist)

USSR didnt allow the countries to have their own economies; instead, they they devloped industries to further benefit the USSR economy, while, further damaging the E. Europe's.

Nikita Khrushchev was Stalin's succsessor in '53. He denounced Stalin for killing loyal Soviets. He started the polocy of Destalinization.

Oct. 1956-uprising in Hungary against Nikita Khrushchev, under the guidance of Imre Nagy. Thousands of Hungarian freedom-fighters were killed by the Soviets.

Leonid Brezhnev gained control of USSR in '54. He did not tolerate dissent among the people. The big conflict was with Czech communist leader, Alexander Dubcek, who tried allowing more freedom of speech.

Sino-soviet split - Russia withdrew ambassadors from China, and China did not like it. China did not feel like partners; Russia did not share nuclear secret or help economically.

Brinkmanship is the policy of threatening to go war in response to any enemy aggression.

in 1970 the US backed away from Brinkmanship because of a mutual fear of a nuclear war. During the administration of JFK, the Cupban Misile Crisis made superpowers use of nuclear weapons a possibility. Lindin Johnson assumed presidency after JFK was assassinated. He increased US involvment in Vietnam War. Detente = policy of lessening Cold War Tensions.
Put to use.
Nixon replaced Brinkmanship. Based on Realpolitik. Nixon, and the leaders of the Soviet Union and Beijing came up with SALT- a policy liminting number of misiles a country could have.
